Erbil, Kurdistan Region of Iraq—August 19, 2025.
Today, on World Humanitarian Day, the Jiyan Foundation joins the global community in honouring humanitarian workers who risk—and too often lose—their lives while serving others.
The humanitarian crisis is worsening. More than 380 aid workers lost their lives in 2024, marking the highest recorded number. At the same time, global humanitarian funding has plummeted, with only about 10–11% of needs met so far in 2025, leaving millions without life-saving assistance.
This crisis is not only about numbers—it is about people. Families struggle to find shelter. Children lack access to food and healthcare. Communities are left unprotected as international humanitarian law is increasingly ignored.
Humanitarian work today is carried out under immense risk. Attacks target aid workers, and funding is vanishing just when they need it most. If we do not protect those who protect others, and if we fail to fund their efforts, we betray our shared humanity.”
